Students marbled onto watercolor paper and used fine tip sharpies and metallic markers to add detail.
Our first time with etching was a great success! 7th graders focused on line work and value in this printmaking project. The etching was done with sharp, pointed tools, called scribes, and Plexiglas. Intaglio ink was pushed into the etching marks and then wiped off so that it only stayed in the recessed areas. The image was then printed using damp paper and a printing press.
7th grade students tried their hand at marbling fabric this year. To achieve this effect, a tray of water is mixed with a seaweed powder that allows the paint to float on the surface rather than sink. Tooth picks and combs are used to make designs in the water, and then fabric or paper is put over the top to transfer the print. Check out the short video to see the process. The next step in this project was to stretch the fabric on embroidery hoops. The hoops allow the fabric to get very tight, which makes it easier to sew. Embroidery needles and embroidery floss were used to add interesting details and add a 3-dimensional element to the art. Some of the various stitches we used were satin stitch, split stitch, french knot, and chain stitch. See some of the beautiful results below!
