3rd trimester 8th graders tried something new this year with a twist on the usual self-portrait. They traced their silhouette and filled it with words and drawings that represented their personalities. Color was added very carefully in layers with colored pencils.

The glazes for these ceramic boxes came out so beautiful and some of the handle designs are just stunning. Great work 8th graders!
Ceramic device holders proved to be a fun, and very functional, project for first trimester students. Beginning with a sketch and the dimensions of their device (iphone, tablet, kindle, etc.), students sculpted their design out of clay and then glazed their piece. Using a special quilling tool and 1/4 inch strips, students rolled paper into different shapes and glued them to matboard. This website has a great tutorial if you want to learn more.
8th graders did a twist on traditional pottery vessels and combined them with textiles. Using string, yarn, and fabric, students wove it throughout the series of holes they made.
Click through the slideshow to see the 8th grade alter ego collages. After brainstorming qualities that their "other self" would have, students got their picture taken and combined it with magazine images. Can you guess what characteristics they are trying to portray? 8th grade students experimented with gel medium transfers on top of collage. We added a tissue paper layer first to give texture, followed by a layer of paint, and finally an image from the website New Old Stock, which has vintage photographs free of any known copyright.
